Robert (known as Roy) Logan Martin: Chairman
Roy Martin was educated at Paisley Grammar School and the University of Glasgow where he graduated as a Bachelor of Laws. He is a practising advocate in Scotland and barrister in England and Wales and became a Queen's Counsel in 1988. He served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Advocates from 2001 to 2004 and Dean of Faculty from 2004 to 2007. He is a member of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland and a Chairman of the Police Appeals Tribunals. He is an Honorary Professor in the University of Glasgow and has served as a Trustee of the National Library of Scotland. He has been a Governor since 2002 and became Chairman in November 2007. He is married and lives in East Lothian and has had three children at Loretto.
Peter Arthur: Joint Vice-Chairman
He was born in 1956 and educated at Drumley House Prep School, Loretto (1969-74) and the University of Edinburgh. He qualified as a solicitor in 1980 and a Chartered Secretary in 1990. He is past-President of the Scottish Wayfarers Club, past-Secretary of the Old Lorettonian Golfing Society and past President of the Edinburgh branch of the British Red Cross. He is a member of the Loretto Management Committee, a Trustee of the Loretto Foundation and a member of the Campaign Executive. He is a keen golfer and is particularly interested in the Golf Academy. He and Dorothy are parents of three boys, the youngest of which attended Loretto.
Michael Black
Born in 1953 and educated at Blanerne Prep. School, Rannoch School and Berwick Grammar School. Studied business at Middlesborough for one year and then joined the family potato merchant and pre-packing business, E.S.Black. Michael worked there until 2000 as managing director and then chairman. Since then he has been aftercare adviser, panel signatory and accelerator panel chair for the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust and Chairman of the Edinburgh region for the last three years.
Anne Brobbel
She was born in 1942 and educated at Queen Mary School for Girls, Lytham St Annes and St Helens High School Oregon as an American Field Service Scholar. She studied Politics and Modern History at the University of Manchester, where she was President of Women Students' Union. She was a Further Education and Secondary School Teacher (History, Modern Studies, Sociology) at a range of institutions including the National Police College, Fire Service, Community Education as well as schools and FE Colleges and was Assistant and then Deputy Principal of George Watson's College, Edinburgh 1986 to 2000. She was a Member of Court of Napier University 1995 to 2004, Chair of the Student Affairs Committee and a member of Fundraising Campaign Executive. She was co-founder of training course for Heads of Department in independent schools and was Educational Consultant to independent schools 2000 to 2004. At Loretto she sits on the Senior School Management Board.
David Christie
He was born in 1942 and educated at Dollar Academy and the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow. He was formerly Warden of St Edward's School, Oxford and is a Director of the Ecclesiastical Insurance group Plc. He taught at George Watson's, Moray House and the European School, Luxembourg and was Head of Economics at Winchester College. He was Chairman of the Oxford Conference in Education; he is a trustee of the Hebridean Trust and he is interested in book collecting, hills and golf. One tiny biographical note - his father was a baker in Musselburgh during the war!
Stephanie Geddes - Clerk to Governors
Born in 1969, she was educated at Park School, Glasgow (1979-1985), Loretto (1985-1987), Bristol University and Guildford College of Law. She qualified as a solicitor in England in 1994 and in Scotland in 1997. Returning to Edinburgh in 1996, she practised as an employment lawyer for 10 years. In 2006 she left private practice to join the family business (Dominoid Ltd, operators of Domino's Pizza for Edinburgh) providing human resources and general legal advice. She is a volunteer visitor for Independent Age. She is an ex member of the Lorettonian Society's Central Committee and joined Loretto's Board of Governors in 2006. Stephanie is married to an OL and has two children at the Nippers.
Lieutenant Colonel Simon J M Graham
He was born in 1966 and educated at Brighton College, Loretto School, Durham University and Strathclyde Graduate Business School. He served with the King's Royal Hussars until 1997 completing operational tours in the Gulf, Bosnia and Northern Ireland. As a Territorial, he is an instructor at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and Commanding Officer (designate) of the Queen's Own Yeomanry. Having spent 7 years in the scotch whisky business, he is now Director of Development at Columba 1400, a charity founded by a former Headmaster of Loretto, Norman Drummond. In addition to his business and military background, Simon is a keen musician having been a music scholar at Loretto and an organ scholar at Durham. He is assistant organist at Dunblane Cathedral. He is married with 3 young children.
Mike Hinton
He was born in 1968 and educated at Loretto (1976-1986) and Edinburgh University (1986-1990). His engineering degree at Edinburgh was followed by training as a Chartered accountant with KPMG in Edinburgh . Following qulaification Mike spent two years in Hong Kong with KPMG. Since then Mike has held board positions in high growth engineering and software companies delivering solutions to complex business issues for a number of companies in diverse industries. Mike's recent work within Cedalion was recognised in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards in 2004 with Cedalion also being recognised in the Deloitte Fast 50 awards for 4 consecutive years. Having sold Cedalion to Charteris plc, Mike is now Managing Director of another IT consultancy. At Loretto he is convenor of Finance and sits on the Management Committee.
Rosalyn Marshall BSc FCCA
Rosalyn was educated at Dundee High School and Mary Erskine School before studying mathematics at Dundee University. She then commenced her career in local government in Edinburgh, qualifying as an accountant in 1984. Following various financial and management roles in the public sector, she joined Graphic Partners, a graphic design partnership, as Financial Controller.
Rosalyn joined Queen Margaret College as Assistant Principal (Administration and Finance) in 1992 and became Vice Principal in 1997. In June 2002 she became the leader of the £105m project to relocate Queen Margaret from its campuses at Corstorphine and Leith to a new purpose built campus at Craighall, Musselburgh which opened in October 2007.
Rosalyn is also the University Secretary and her other responsibilities include Development, Marketing and Communications.
Rosalyn has been a member of the Accounts Commission for Scotland, the UK Higher Education Value for Money Steering Group and a board member of The Edinburgh Academy. She is currently a member of Common Purpose Advisory Group Edinburgh and the Audit Committee of Historic Scotland.
Jeff Semple
Was educated at Belmont House School, Glasgow (1954-1963) and Loretto (1963-1968). Jeff is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and is currently Chairman of James Barr Limited following nine years as Chief Executive. He has three children, all of whom attended Loretto.
Mark Simmers
Was educated at Glasgow Academy (1974-1980), Loretto (1980-1985) and the University of Bristol. Mark has worked in Sports Management for over 16 years, starting out with Mark McCormack's IMG in London with the International Golf Event Management Team in 1991. In 1996 Mark joined Event Services Company, J. A. Tonge Ltd, to head up the management of the Scottish Open Golf at Loch Lomond for three years, and the Solheim Cup 2000. In 2001 Mark set up his own company, Simmers Enterprises Ltd, which worked on a wide range of event projects with clients such as Bentley Motors, The Daily Record, the SFA and the SRU. In April 2007 Mark was appointed Chief Executive of the British Ski and Snowboard Federation, the national governing body for snowsport in the UK. He is married with three young children.
Amanda Swanson
Was born in 1961 and educated at Wellington School, Ayr (1965-1978) and Edinburgh University (1978-1981). Her Business Studies degree was followed by training as an investment manager at Ivory and Sime in Edinburgh. She subsequently worked for Walter Scott and Partners in Edinburgh, Morgan Stanley in London and New York, and Kempen Capital Management Ltd before leaving in March 2000 to set up Euronova Asset Management Ltd in which she was a founder shareholder and director. This has now become an LLP and in addition to her investment management role Amanda is a partner, compliance officer and CFO. She is also a director of Euronova Smaller Companies Fund. She is married and has three sons, one of whom is at Loretto.
William Waterhouse
He was born in 1945 and educated at Loretto 1958-1962, where he was the School Organist. He is Managing Director of Bulmer & Lumb Group (Wool Textiles), Bradford (Management buy out from Allied Textiles Limited in January 2002). His two sons attended Loretto. Areas of School life he is particularly interested in are Seton and all aspects of Finance.
Sheila Low
Sheila was educated at Wellington School, Ayr and Loretto (1981-1982) being in the first in take of girls into the sixth form when the School went co-educational.Following a Law Degree at University of Aberdeen, she pursued a career in investment manager and was employed by The Alliance Trust and Scottish Widows. A switch to venture capital led to 5 non -executive director positions and the establishment of her own business. This childrens nursery was built up and sold to another operator.There followed a career with Baker Tilly in corporate finance for many years. After a family break she has returned to Baker Tilly in January 2008 as Business Development Director.
Loretto Governor from 1995-2007 and from 2008 to present. Sheila has 4 children and is Chairman of The Lorettonian Society.
