Holm House

Holm HouseHolm House for 2nd - 5th Form boarders. There are two girls' boarding houses, Balcarres and Holm, which occupy an attractive site traditionally known as Trafalgar Lodge. When entering the landscaped grounds of Holm House the history which lies behind the present site is not at first apparent. The site has seen many changes over the years as it has become incorporated within an evolving Loretto.

It is a rather different house to the one remembered by OLs of the 1913 era. The accommodation now caters for 2nd - 5th Form girls under the guidance of Mrs Kerry McLean as housemistress, in well-equipped single studies and shared study bedrooms of 2-4 sharing. Each room has its own wash hand basin and is adjacent to a shower and separate toilet. Bathrooms are well distributed over each floor and the house has facilities for disabled girls. There are two common rooms, each with kitchen area and comfortable seating. The larger of the two rooms offers a small library to encourage reading for relaxation. Both common rooms have a TV, video/DVD/CD players and microwaves. There is a computer room.

Holm House aims to create a happy and relaxed atmosphere in which girls feel at home. They work together to provide a secure and caring environment in which each girl can develop her ability to work within a team, as an individual, and feel valued within the Holm community. The qualities of caring, courtesy, communication and co-operation are emphasised. Holm House is a multi-talented House. Whether in music, drama, sport or art, all the girls are encouraged to build on their talents and try new opportunities. Although Loretto's ethos is one of togetherness with little inter-house competition, the house spirit is still tangible.
