Deputy Head, Biology

E: nbidgood@loretto.com
T: 0131 653 4446

Nigel has been a housemaster for thirteen years and a deputy head for just over 7 years in two other independent schools prior to joining Loretto. He is a biologist and a specialist on arctic plants having completed a research degree into their adaptations to stressed environments. He has led over 20 major expeditions to arctic and sub-arctic areas; over half of these involving school pupils supported by dozens of training expeditions in the mountains of Britain. His favourite expedition destination is Greenland and in 2011 he will lead the first mountaineering expedition of the newly formed Loretto Borealis Society – to East Greenland. This academic society has at its core the opportunity for sixth formers to experience the challenge of mountaineering and exploring in remote northern areas. In recognition of his services to youth expeditions Nigel was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Geographical Society in 1994 and presently sits on the committee for the Independent School Adventure Advisory Authority (ISAAA).
