I graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1991 with a first class honours degree in Zoology. I was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Zoology at the University of Western Ontario, which involved four field seasons in the Canadian Rockies, near Calgary, Alberta. My research focussed on the behavioural ecology of bushy-tailed woodrats with particular emphasis on mating systems and breeding success. After graduating with a PhD in 1996, I lectured at the University of Western Ontario, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Massachusetts before taking up a 1 year postdoctoral position at Miami University (Ohio).
I returned to Scotland and completed a PGCE course at the University of Aberdeen before joining Loretto as a teacher of Biology and Assistant Housemaster of Pinkie in 2000. Since then I have been Housemaster of Pinkie (2001-2006), Head of Biology (September 2008 onwards) and most recently Director of Academic Progress from September 2009. Outside school, I enjoy spending time with my family, refereeing rugby matches, recreational summer touch rugby, travelling and karate.
