David J Adamson

History, Government and Politics, Head of Sixth Form

I studied History at St Andrews University between 1995 and 1999 (1st Class Honours and Mary Anderson prize for Scottish History), focusing on Scottish History 1560-1660, British Social History 1600-1800, Imperialism, Italian Unification and Historical Interpretations. After a brief flirtation with London’s wine trade I was awarded a Caledonian Research Scholarship from the Carnegie Trust. I returned to Scotland to research untouched English and Scottish criminal cases from 1660 to 1830, focusing on what insanity actually meant in those days, how this meaning changed and whether criminal insanity pleas were faked or used by juries who wanted to avoid executing criminals. As was expected, plenty of interesting conclusions could be reached but no straightforward answers can be applied! In 2005 I began my teaching career at Malvern College, an independent boarding school in Worcestershire where my responsibilities included supervising all University applications, providing “Careers” advice and assisting the Head of Sixth Form in Academic matters. I taught History and created the junior International Relations society besides preparing Oxbridge candidates and leading a series of afternoon workshops for GCSE revision and exam techniques. Outside of the classroom I was involved in senior school football, cricket, squash and fives as well as coaching rackets to the Prep school from time to time. I also helped to run a boys’ boarding house as a Tutor once per week.
