Bursaries and Scholarships at Loretto

Bursaries

Loretto strives to have a diverse School roll by providing financial support to as many children as possible from all sectors of the community. Currently about a quarter of all pupils receive some form of financial help from the School through a bursary or scholarship award.

Bursaries are available to support non-scholarship and some scholarship children. These are means-tested to help families with limited financial means to be educated at Loretto.

Parents wanting to make initial enquiries about bursary support from the School should contact the Bursary. Parents who progress to filling out a bursary support form must have their child registered (Senior School Registration Form) with the Admissions Department. Completed bursary forms should be sent to the Headmaster. The bursary form is approved by the Independent Schools' Bursars' Association; this is available from the Bursary.

What is the value of a means-tested bursary?

This depends on each individual case. Means-tested bursary support is typically from 5% to 30% of fees. Additional bursary support may be possible in exceptional circumstances. Please note that a child must be registered with the Admissions Department before an application for a bursary can be made.

Services Bursaries

Some Service Bursaries are available for families from the Armed Services.

University Awards: Lamert Bursaries (Sixth Form)

Sidney S Lamert, a distinguished former Governor and pupil of Loretto, generously endowed a trust to support Lorettonians at University and other further education establishments. The awards are in the range of £500 - £1,500 and are for three or four years. The application forms are available from the Headmaster's PA. The final date for the receipt of applications is the beginning of a pupil's final Summer Term.

GAP Year Awards: The Gordon Voluntary Award

The generosity of the Gordon family enables up to four Lorettonians to apply for grants for voluntary service in their GAP year. The typical payment is around £1,000. Further details are available from the Headmaster's Secretary.

Loretto will also help parents with applications for funding to external trust funds. Further information about applying for external bursaries is available from the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS), the Independent Schools Council Information Service (ISCis) www.isc.co.uk/ParentZone_WhatDoesItCost.htm and The Joint Educational Trust, 6 Lovat Lane, London EC3R 8DT.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded for outstanding candidates of above average ability. They are competitive and are granted for the honour they bestow on a child. Some scholarships include a financial award.

What is the value of a scholarship?

If a financial element is granted with a scholarship, the financial value is typically from 5% to 20% of fees. If the value of the scholarship is insufficient for parents to afford the fees parents can apply for a means-tested bursary to supplement the value of the scholarship.

Detailed information on scholarships can be requested by contacting the Admissions Department t: 00 44 (0) 0131 653 4455 or email admissions@loretto.com.
