Loretto provides a stimulating environment in which students of all ages can create challenging and inventive theatre. As an examined discipline at Loretto, drama achieves excellent results which are founded on outstanding practical work. A varied programme of productions offers all pupils, whether or not they formally study drama, opportunities to discover something about themselves through being part of a disciplined and creative team.We enjoy having our own 320-seat theatre but also make imaginative use of space around Loretto's remarkable campus. Passion, creativity and discipline inform the work that we do.
Scholars' programme
We expect drama scholars to participate in a range of productions and to take drama as an examined subject within the curriculum. What we offer them, through expert tuition and exposure to a challenging variety of work, is the chance to develop their skills and talents to a level where they can confidently consider a career in performance. A good number of our students have this ambition and go on to study performance of various kinds - dance, acting and musical theatre - and achieve success in their chosen fields.
Assessments
Candidates for a drama Scholarship should prepare three pieces for performance. Two should be from published plays, one from the twentieth or twenty-first centuries, and one from the work of Shakespeare or another playwright from the 16th/17th centuries. Neither piece should exceed 3 minutes in length. The modern piece may be taken from musical theatre. They should also bring music for a song to perform.
Candidates are interviewed by the Directors of Drama and Expressive Arts and should be ready to talk about their pieces as well as their experience of performance, including theatrical performances that they have recently seen.
Jack Fletcher, Fourth Form Drama Scholar
"When I was given an all-round scholarship to Loretto, majoring in art and drama, I was ecstatic because I had managed to get into a school which nearly everybody I knew had been talking about. The difference between Loretto and other places was immediately obvious from my first day: because of its size, everybody seemed to know everybody and they all seemed so friendly. Loretto is a place were you make life long friends.
"The facilities are much better than my old school. The thing that really impressed me was the theatre. A major part of my scholarship is drama, so I was really stunned by it. It has everything you need to put on a top class production."
Major theatrical productions over the last few years haveincluded Into the Woods, Twelfth Night, Summer Holiday, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Annie, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, HMS Pinafore, Journey's End, The Kissing Dance, DNA and The Real Inspector Hound.
