Junior School Academic Scholarships

Scholarship awards may be offered to external candidates entering Year 6 (10 year-olds) and Year 7 (11 year-olds). These scholarships are for the duration of a candidate's education at both the Junior and the Senior Schools and can be supplemented by a means-tested bursary. These scholarships are reviewed annually to ensure that the pupil is continuing to perform at a high level. All candidates will sit papers in:

● English, Mathematics and a Verbal Reasoning (IQ) Test

All scholarship candidates will be interviewed by the Headmaster during the assessment day and a report from the pupil's present school will be obtained.

All-Rounder Awards

Scholarship awards may be offered to external candidates entering Year 6 (10 year-olds) and Year 7 and can be

supplemented by a means-tested bursary. These awards are for the duration of a candidate's education in the Junior School and in the Senior School. All candidates will sit academic papers in:

● English, Mathematics and a Verbal Reasoning (IQ) Test. In addition to a general interview, prospective pupils select any two of the following areas in which to be assessed:

Art

The candidate should bring some examples of his or her best work and be prepared to discuss this with the Head of Art. A good level of drawing and painting is expected and there will be a short drawing test.

Music

The candidate will be expected to demonstrate a knowledge of music theory and musical ability through playing one or more chosen pieces. At least one instrument should be demonstrated to Grade 2 standard. Preferably, the candidate will also be willing to sing a short song of his or her choice.

Drama

The candidate will be asked to perform and talk about a prepared piece of about 12 lines from a poem or play. He or she may be asked to read an unseen piece of drama or perform a short improvised piece.

Sport

Basic athletic skills will be assessed: running, throwing, coordination and speed. A knowledge and interest in sport will be expected and particular attention will be paid to a candidate's ability in his or her strongest discipline.

Academic Exhibitions

A limited number of awards are available to current pupils in Year 5 (9 year-olds). These awards recognise achievement and effort in academic studies and are for the final two years of a candidate's education in the Junior School. These awards will be based on recommendations from all teaching staff.
