Leadership Activities

Leadership and service are central to Loretto's ethos. The activities described below develop physical and mental stamina, self-reliance, teamwork and an awareness of the needs of others.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

All three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) can be undertaken on a voluntary and non-competitive basis. A feature of the Scheme at Loretto is the number of boys and girls who are Direct Entrants to Gold in the Lower Sixth. Considerable numbers are successful each year. There is strong staff support for this flourishing activity. The highlight of the year is the presentation of certificates at Holyrood by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

"I joined the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Having completed my Bronze Award, I decided to start the Gold Award. This involved doing physical recreation and community service over 12 to 18 months, as well as a week long residential project. The main parts of the Award were the expeditions and practice trips. My group was a great mix of people, and we bonded well". Kirsty McKelvey - Sixth Form pupil.

Combined Cadet Force

Boys and girls spend seven terms with the CCF. In addition to Military skills there is considerable emphasis on Camping, Expeditioning, Navigation, First Aid and Adventurous Training. Those in the RN Section have the opportunity to develop waterborne skills. A feature of the CCF is the opportunity to go on service run camps and courses at little or no cost.
