Mythical Creatures
In writing this term, Year 5 has been writing this term about mythical creatures. We have each invented our own mythical creature to use in our own myths. There is a variety of different creatures. First we made a fact file of our own mythical creature and explained what they looked like, where they lived and what their behaviour was like. Then we wrote the first two paragraphs, the character description and the setting. We are currently writing the main part of our stories. We are looking forward to reading everyone else’s stories once they are all finished.

Drama Workshop

Year 5 took part in a Shakespeare Drama Workshop with Michelle Van Rensberg from The Little Shakespeare Company. We played games about Macbeth, a famous Scottish story. We also acted out little scenes from Macbeth. To warm up we played the name game, where we had to say our name and do an action. We had to remember everybody’s name and action, it was quite difficult! We then played a very hard sword fighting game in pairs. You had to put one hand on your back and defend yourself with the other. The aim of the game was to try and touch the other person’s hand on their back. It was a great session and we really enjoyed it.

India Assembly
Year 5 did an assembly on India a couple of weeks ago to explain to the rest of the school what we had been learning about in our topic lessons this term. We thought up a fact on India for every letter of the alphabet, which told the rest of the school lots of information about the life, culture, food and religion of in India. We also had a power point slide show which had lots of pictures for the audience to look at. We sang a song called India India by John Lennon at the start and end of our performance. Mr Hutch played the guitar along with us. It took a few weeks to practice but we all learnt our lines and more about India.

Merchiston Maths Fun Day
Four pupils from Year 5 took part in the Merchiston Fun Day last week. The day was split into 2 parts. The morning session was problem solving challenges which were quite tricky, but we worked really hard and didn’t give up. After lunch we were split into pairs and had to answer difficult maths questions, it was timed and we had to get as many questions right as we could. When the results were being calculated, a magician came to entertain us. There were 32 teams in total and overall we came in 2nd place. It was a great day, we had a lot of fun and we enjoyed representing the school. We were all very pleased with the result!
