Drama

Drama in the Nippers is taught by both Sarah Kettlewell.

The children are taught many acting and performing skills and there are many opportunities to perform throughout the school year, both in the Junior and Senior plays and in whole class dramas.

Nippers play: Annie

Drama is taught in the hall in North Esk Lodge where we have a stage and our main production is performed in the newly refurbished Loretto Theatre at the Senior School.

Sarah directs our school productions alongside our Director of Music Kenny Hutchison. These are always difficult to cast as the Senior play in particular usually attracts every eligible pupil. In recent years our productions have included, ‘Bugsy Malone’; ‘Grease’; ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Oliver!’ with whole class dramas including ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’; ‘Macbeth’ and ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole’. There is also an Early Years' Christmas show each year and we have also staged ‘The Grinch’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ at this time.

This year's Junior Play was A Christmas Carol whilst the older children performed Annie.

We make use of the nearby Brunton Theatre when possible, and also the theatres in Edinburgh. We make use of visiting actors and travelling theatre companies. The children are also able to visit Senior School productions and see for themselves how the talent nourished in the Nippers is developed in later years!
