Communication is a fundamental part of education for life. The children’s reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are developed through a range of activities. A variety of different texts are covered at each stage, including novels, plays, short stories and poetry. Diverse forms of writing are studied in order to foster an awareness of appropriate style, content and register for varying purposes and audiences. Debates and public speaking competitions are also organised.

The Scottish 5-14 curriculum guidelines for English Language are used for planning and assessment purposes and work is often differentiated in order to take into account the individual needs of pupils. At least one lesson a week is devoted to developing grammar and spelling skills, using the Nelson Spelling and Grammar Scheme. Reading for both enjoyment and for research is actively encouraged; the school boasts a newly refurbished library with IT facilities and internet access.
