Support for Learning
Aims
Every child at the Nippers is a member of a mainstream class. Our support system aims to allow each pupil to take an active and meaningful part in class. We consider that reading is the key to every subject so we aim to improve reading skills and fluency in all our pupils.
How it works
All Nippers are given standardised tests every year so that we can measure progress and detect any learning problems. If required, Morag Reeves, the Support Learning teacher, or a qualified psychologist will carry out further individual testing. As ours is a small school we consider it important that all staff are involved in the assessment and any decisions taken.
Once we have a pupil profile we will arrange appropriate support for the pupils who require it. A support programme may involve help within the class, individual or small group tuition, or both. For example, dyslexic children will usually require individual reading tuition to achieve their potential. Morag has regular meetings with senior school staff and every effort is made to make sure that pupils have a smooth transition to the senior school. Learning support will continue into the senior school if required. We want our procedures to be flexible so that every child can acquire the skills needed for learning, while continuing to take part in all the educational and extra-curricular activities the school provides.
Above all we believe a happy child will enjoy learning and that a child who is learning will be happy.
