U12 Cricket v Fathers' L 86 for 9 FX1 77 all out (boys won by 9 runs)
The boys triumphed in the annual clash of the families with a resounding 9 run victory. The boys were pegged back by some athletic fielding from the seniors with Mr Middlemass outstanding behind the stumps with his quick feet and quick wit. The dads chased every ball as if their lives depended on it and came off the field well please but extremely exhausted. After an inspiring half-time talk from the eloquent Mr Middlemass, (the heartbeat of the team), the dads strode out confidently to run down the score. However disaster struck as Mr Dickinson was run out early by a brilliant piece of fielding by Dickinson junior. After that it was all downhill for the dads, although Mr Yates struck several fierce hits and Callum Brechin also scored runs. All hope went as Mr Middlemass was dismissed and an ugly and heated exchange followed resulting in disciplinary procedures against the said batsmen! The elegant Dr. Milne was left stranded not out at the other end, as the dads slumped to an embarrassing defeat; a shocking result really. Thank you to all the dads for taking part and there is always next year.
Year 7 Rounders v St Olave's
The Year 7 girls enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of rounders against 2 very friendly and welcoming St. Olave's teams in York. The teams were closely matched the first match making for an exciting game. Fantastic catches by Anna Logan and Venetia Smith were a highlight in this super match. The final score was 14 to Loretto and 12 to St. Olave's. A well deserved victory for our girls! The second match was a tougher challenge. The opposition were very big hitters and our deep fielders had a lot of work to do! Our deep fielders responded well to this pressure and were given lots of support and encouragement from the rest of the team. Milly Eyre worked particularly hard displaying a strong over arm throw. A positive attitude and a determination not to give up meant that the final score was a respectable 18 to St. Olave's and 11 to Loretto. Alex Stuart deserves a special mention for being top Loretto scorer!
U12a Cricket L144 for 4 STO60 all out (won by 84 runs)
On a dazzling summer's day in York the Year 7 tourists rattled up a big score against a weakened home team. James Dickinson (25rt) and Joe Waterston (25 rt) set the pace with Euan Milne (11) Dylan Pearce (18no) and Murray Brechin (19no) adding further late runs. In reply the bowling duties was shared around with Joshua Miyake ( 2 for 8), claiming his first wickets of the season. Cameron Blair (2 for 2) and Peter Elrick (1 for 8) helped put pressure on the Yorkshiremen. In the field Hamish Adamson was outstanding. A great game as everyone contributed.
U12b Cricket STO160-5 L146 - 7 (lost by 14 runs)
This was a good opportunity for the less experienced cricketers to represent the school and they did so with credit. Patrick de Waard was our main threat with the ball and was backed up well in the field by Russell Edmond and Atholl Stanhope-Jones as our hosts totalled 160 off their allotted overs. In reply we started slowly but runs eventually came from Michael Jeffrey and skipper, Gabe Devine. With overs running out we had a chance of a win with Atholl and Oliver going well at the crease but the St Olave's final bowler denied us a win with a mean spell and we ended up just short of our target.
Clifton Hall U10a 201-2 Loretto U10b 160 for 4 ( lost by 41 runs)
The Under 10bs had a tough match against Clifton Hall U10as and this was made more difficult through the loss of several players to the Athletics match. However the boys batted well and we saw some good bowling from Callum Ewart, Conor Smith and Cal Molloy. In the field Lachlan Hinley and Hamish Kuperus chased energetically and Jamie Nicholson, Rory Napier and Josh Gray threatened with the bat. Ultimately the Clifton Hall boys were too strong for us but the boys selected for Loretto performed with credit - well done.
Mothers v Daughters Rounders Mums-14 Daughters-12 ½
Feeling confident after a win in York, we discussed our approach and decided to give the mums a chance on Saturday morning. After all, we have had more experience in playing Rounders recently. We were however taken by surprise with the skills the mums displayed and the enthusiasm with which they approached the match. Alex Stuart had spent time in the car that morning teaching her mum the rules and that certainly showed in the match. Alex was very proud of her mum and delighted she didn't embarrass her. Helen MacEwan also offered her mum words of encouragement and advice from the side shouting ""remember to keep your eye on the ball mum". With this, Mrs MacEwan went on to score a number of rounders for the mums' side. Millie Eyre was a little disappointed when her own mum caught her out at 2nd post and had to have words with her on the way home. We'd like to say a big thank you to all the mums who took part for making it such a fun match. We've heard that some of them mums were quite sore afterwards so we hope you have all now recovered. Congratulations on your well- deserved win!

Athletics v Compass L- 146 C- 140 (win)
Compass joined us on Monday afternoon to compete in a combination of long jump, cricket ball, sprints and relays. The final score was very close although each team proved to have very different strengths. Compass shone in the long jump with very speedy take-offs enabling them to jump very far indeed....although Xander Brook certainly gave them a run for their money with his whopping jump! In the cricket ball throwing Loretto won each age group, and we also won the majority of the relays. Well done everyone for an excellent team effort!
U11b Cricket v Cargilfield C-80 for 8 - Loretto 74 for 7 (lost by 6 runs)
Some tight bowling from George Ramage, Robert Ogilvy and Murray McNeill helped to restrict the home team after they had got off to a good start. Daniel Kim also took late wickets (2 for 8), Tom Peck took a great catch behind the stumps and Rory Gibson and William Finlay threw themselves around enthusiastically in the field as the boys came of the pitch quite pleased with their efforts. In reply Adrian Avellaneda struck the ball hard but both Adrian and Sam Hewitson were adjudged run out by the narrowest of margins as the target started to slip away. However, skipper Lawrence Bissell had other ideas as he strode to the crease and he was well assisted by Thomas Peck and Grant MacDonald as they gathered runs here, there and everywhere. With just one over remaining Loretto needed 7 to win with Lawrence on strike and in good form; a win looked on the cards. Unfortunately Lawrence was out lbw from the first ball of that over and our chance had gone. This was a thrilling match.
