National Schools Lacrosse Championships 2010 - London
10 March 2010
50 schools from all over Great Britain took part in the National Schools Lacrosse Championships in London on 5th and 6th March.
Loretto's first match on the Friday was against the previous year's finalists and this years overall winner, St Catherines, A difficult start to the tournament but one that the girls were up to meeting the challenge. They played well and defended well against the barrage of attacking play that St Catherines produced. Goalie, Phoebe Bolton stood tall and made some great one on one saves against St. Catherines. Loretto lost however they were proud to have risen to such a challenge. The rest of the first day saw the girls build in confidence and play hard against some very strong southern opposition which included Cheltenham Ladies College, St. Mary's, Calne and Habs, Elstree. By the end of day one, the girls had managed to secure a position in the division 2 section for Saturday.
The McNess family kindly hosted us for dinner on Friday night. As has become tradition a wonderful cake had been produced for our visit. We had a superb evening, enjoying some wonderful food and home comforts, including lots of affection from Archie the dog!
Saturday morning started with a match against St. Georges, Harpenden, who we played the day before and lost 3-2. The girls controlled the ball most of the match but had difficulty scoring the goal ahead goal against St.Georges. The match would end with a 1-1 draw. They then went on to beat Uppingham 4 - 1. Celine Brown had a superb match against Uppingham scoring two goals and winning half of the draws in the contest while Lucy Mackay and Charlie McNess kept Uppingham away from their goal for the majority of the match. There next game was the most difficult of the section and they lost against Kings. They then produced some excellent lacrosse to beat Casterton 5 - 1. D-wing, Honor Dalrymple got onto the score sheet as she took an amazing bounce shot 12 meters out that made its way right under the cross bar for a goal. The next match was crucial to gain a place in the top 2 of the section and it was against Cranleigh. Tiredness was beginning to set in as they battled hard but sadly lost 2 - 1. They picked themselves up for the final match with Georgie Single leading the way scoring both goals in the match. Georgie's second goal came with just seconds to spare as she played a lovely hockey shot on the ground to score the final goal of the game to tie 2 - 2 with St. Barts. Sadly we missed out on a place in the semi finals of division 2 however the team were pleased with their performance and are ready to play some strong lacrosse in the Scottish Tournament next week
