Loretto crowned HMC National Foursomes Golf Championships.

Lewis Gregory (c), Maximilian Walz, Marvin Aurnhammer, Julie Yang, Peter Templeton, Lesley Atkins led the Loretto team to victory by winning their group and going on to beat Millfield 2 - 1 in the final.

Director of Golf, Rick Valentine reports;

The HMC (Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference) British Foursomes final was held at Craigielaw Golf Club and hosted by Loretto School.

Loretto's opening match was against Epsom resulting in a 2-1 win for Loretto. The second match saw Julie Yang and Lewis Gregory going an extra 6 holes before losing by the narrowest of margins. In the afternoon, Loretto played RGS Guildford where the team performed exceptionally well to win 3-0.

Loretto's semi-final match was against Truro who had also won both of their opening matches. Loretto's third pairing of Peter Templeton and Lesley Atkins played exceptional golf to go 8 up after 9 before winning 7&6. Julie Yang and Lewis Gregory also performed well for a convincing victory, whilst Maximilian Walz and Marvin Aurnhammer lost out in a very tight match. This win put Loretto into the final to face Millfield. Julie Yang and Lewis Gregory again played excellent golf to win their match 4&3. The other two matches were much closer.

Maximilian Walz and Marvin Aurnhammer had a chance to almost put their match beyond doubt on the 16th but a three putt still left Millfield in with a chance. On 17, Loretto's ball plugged in the greenside bunker allowing Millfield to bring the match level with a par. Both pairs were close to the green in 2 on the par 5 18th, Maximilian Walz chipped up to about 12 feet whilst Millfield finished 6 feet away.

Marvin Aurnhammer then holed the decisive putt up the hill amidst a very tense atmosphere and Millfield then missed their putt resulting in Loretto winning the title for the second time in the last 5 years.

The final match also went to the 18th hole where Millfield holed from 12 feet to take a point.

This capped Loretto's most successful season to date with wins in the HMC British Foursomes, ISGA Home Internationals, Inter Collegiate National Players Final and second place in the ISGA British Finals.

The competition took place on the 5th and 6th July at Craigielaw Golf Club in Scotland.
