Lesley Atkins, Loretto School Golfer, wins Scottish Girls U18 Championships

22 July 2010

After playing seven rounds of golf, many in gale-force conditions, in just five days Loretto Golfer, Lesley Atkins, from Hawick, won the Scottish Girls Under 18 Golf Championship at Eyemouth recently. The 15-year-old Gullane Ladies Junior member beat the rival finalist, by five and four. The high winds of earlier in the week had subsided for the final and Lesley, the youngest ever Borders women's county champion when she was a member at Minto Golf Club, was level par for the 14 holes played. Her rival finalist led briefly after a birdie four at the first but Atkins squared the match with a par at the second and went ahead to stay by holing a 25ft putt for a birdie two at the short third. Lesley doubled her lead even with a bogey five at the eighth and was two up at the turn.

Lesley, Scottish Under-14 girls' champion in 2008, wrapped up her second national title with a winning par at the 11th followed by back-to-back birdies at the 13th, holing from 25ft, and 14th, holing from seven feet. Only a few months after taking up Golf, she won the UK Wee Wonders' age group title at the age of eight, which led to a trip to the United States. More recently she won the Scottish Under 14 girls' championship.
