New Headmaster of Loretto Junior School

Mr Philip Meadows

BA, CertEd, MA (Cantab)

The Governors and Headmaster are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Philip Meadows as the new Headmaster of Loretto Junior School from April 2009 following the retirement of Mr Richard Selley, the current headmaster.

Mr Philip Meadows will be returning to Loretto having been head of Chemistry at Loretto from 1987 - 1996. From Loretto he joined Sedbergh School as a Housemaster and since then he has been Headmaster of two successful junior schools: Mowden Hall School, one of Northumberland's leading prep schools for 3 - 13 years, and Tettenhall College Junior School, a day school for 3 - 11 years, which feeds into Tettenhall College in Wolverhampton.

Under Philip Meadow's headship at Mowden Hall, the school continued its long-standing record of outstanding achievement across sport, music and drama as well as academic success. In particular Philip Meadows, a Cambridge graduate, strengthened the academic programme resulting in over half of all pupils gaining scholarship awards to top class independent senior schools including Rugby, Ampleforth, Sedbergh and Gordonstoun.

Currently Head at Tettenhall College Junior School, Mr Meadows says about his new appointment:

"I am delighted to be given the opportunity of returning to Loretto where I have very fond memories. Since leaving Scotland I have been the head of two very different junior schools which have a number of similarities to Loretto Junior School.

"The lifestyle of an independent school is one that I love, and Loretto's emphasis on the development of the whole person, mind, body and spirit, through academic study, the arts, extra-curricular and sporting activities is one I fully endorse."

Mr Roy Martin, Chairman of the Board of Governors at Loretto, says:

"Philip Meadows is a man of considerable experience and talents as well as having an exemplary track record and excellent qualifications. He is a top class educationalist with a clear understanding of what parents want from a school.

"The education of our children at Loretto is a cooperative and collaborative process between the school, parents and children. I have no doubt that Philip's energy and obvious commitment will make this a very exciting appointment for the Junior School."

Philip Meadows started his teaching career in Scotland in 1983. He is currently an examiner for OCR and the Cambridge Pre-U launched by Cambridge this year and seen as a more rigorous alternative to A-levels.

He is committed to the value added aspect of an independent education and sees it as in integral part of his role to create opportunities for children in a far reaching range of extra-curricular and sporting activities. In this capacity he has led racing and recreational skiing trips to the Alps and organised rugby and cricket tours to South Africa, Canada and the West Indies. He is an experienced leader of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, a 1st XV rugby coach and played rugby for Heriots FP RFC.

Philip Meadows, aged 47, is married to Sylvia and they have three children, one of 14 and twins of 11.

Ends.
