Loretto Pipe Band and Highland Dancers perform at Lord's at the New Zealand Test Match

Loretto's pipes and drums travelled down to Lord's cricket ground on Friday 17th May. This year was the first where highland dancers were able to perform. We stayed at R.A. F. Halton and played at their officers' mess before rehearsing for the following day. Due to the unpredictable British weather we were unable to play on the actual cricket ground as the rain was too heavy and play was suspended, instead we marched on the nursery pitch adjacent to the stadium. An audience gathered so despite the rain we were still able to perform to a number of spectators. A highlight of the day was watching half the English team walk past the band, the majority of them at least 6ft tall! There was also a great atmosphere and subsequently remains a highlight of the band's annual calendar.

Annual Beating Retreat

Our annual mass pipes and drums Beating Retreat were held at Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. After 2 long rehearsals we performed in the palace grounds first and then the esplanade on the 20th and 21st of May. Many thanks to the juniors who helped stand in for seniors who were in the mist of exams. The performances went well and it was rewarding to play with such a large number of pipers, drummers and dancers of the same age.
