Spring Term 2008
Week 9
Dandylions vs WOSPS
![]()
On Wednesday 5 March, Loretto girls represented the Dandylions in A and B hockey matches against the WOSPS. Both matches were very close and competitive but sadly WOSPS came out on top in both. Congratulations to the five girls who represented Loretto so well!

Week 8
U15 XV v Musselburgh Grammar School under XV Plate Quarter Final, 29 February 2008
Some very muddy but extremely happy 3rd and 4th form boys produced an extraordinarily skilful and brave performance in foul weather this afternoon to beat Musselburgh Grammar School 24-15!
1st XI reach semi-finals of Schools Cup, 26 February 2008
The 1st XI survived a spirited second half come-back from Stewart's Melville to book their place in the semi-finals of the Schools Cup. We were 4-0 ahead at half-time, with Adams Wraight and Galloway on the score card. Despite vowing not to relax, this inevitably happened and gradually the opposition came back into the game, and at 4-3 we looked shaky. Another goal from Adam Galloway made it 5-3. But still they came back at us, and scored to make it 5-4. James McCormick made a great save in the last play of the match to ensure no penalty flicks!
Week 7
Loretto U14s retain Chameleons trophy, 24 February 2008
The U16 and U14 Scottish Chameleons 6 a side tournament was held on Sunday, this year at Glenalmond. The U14s won their section to recapture the trophy that Loretto won last year. They defeated Fettes and Glenalmond comfortably, and Strathallan 1-0, to finish in top spot. Captain Jonny Perriam scored most of the goals, but all players should be congratulated on a fine effort. Loretto's team, pictured here : Jonny Perriam, Charlie Tressider, Richard Yarrow, Struan White, James Sharp, Colin Manders, Cameron Warnock, Harry Gobourn.
The U16 tournament was won by Strathallan. Loretto played them first up, losing 0-4. We improved in the 2nd half against Glenalmond, but lost 2-4, before losing 2-3 to Fettes having been 2-0 ahead at half-time.
Eight Loretto pupils have qualified for the U19 Scotland Lacrosse A and B teams for the international tournament at Moreton Hall School (Oswestry) to take place on 16 March.
Football: Loretto 1st XI v Merchiston Castle School
The second half of term began in great style for Loretto's recently established 1st football XI.
On a bumpy pitch, Loretto played much the better football, establishing a 3-0 half time lead, courtesy of two clinical finishes by Adam Galloway and a scorcher from Angus Cappi. The Merchiston offside trap was frequently breached, and they ultimately went man-to-man in an effort to stem the tide of the Loretto attack.
An own goal permitted hope to rise slightly amongst a vociferous home support, and MCS went close twice, but were foiled by the crossbar and the excellence of keeper Tom Swan respectively. As the game progressed, Lorettonian dominance was once more established, with Galloway lobbing the goalie to complete his hat-trick and sub. Nick Binder finishing off a move of elegant simplicity.
Highly commended were Henry Featherstone, who bestrode the midfield like a colossus, and Cameron Bouwer, who worked tirelessly at left back to nullify their main threat.
Won 3-1
Week 5
Boys Hockey Update
The 1st XI progressed to the quarter-finals of the U18 Schools cup, with a 4-2 victory over St Leonards! Adam Wraight (2), Reece Taylor and Charles Richards scored the goals, but it wasn't a convincing final 20 minutes as we allowed our opponents back into the game with some poor defending and decision-making. The 2nd XI played Edinburgh Academy 1st XI on the same afternoon, winning a fast, physical game 6-3. The Junior teams have been busy too, with matches at U13, U14 and U15 against George Watsons (7-0, 4-0, and 4-7 were the scores respectively). The U13s also played Cargilfield, drawing 3-3 in a good game, Oscar Lowe scoring 2 goals.
Week 4
Loretto 1st XII success in the Small Schools Tournament
A huge congratulations to the 1st XII in their performance at the Small Schools Tournament at Casterton. The girls played absolutely brilliantly, having 3 shut-outs, two solids wins, and only one loss throughout the day. They started the day off strong beating Casterton 5-0 (after only a 4-2 win at our last tournament).

Boys Hockey Update
After a frustrating start, with matches 'frozen off 'in week 1, the boy's hockey season is well and truly underway, with success at all levels. The 1st and 2nd XIs began with good performances against George Watsons (2-2 and 4-1 respectively), with the Junior teams then managing 3 victories over Fettes, at Junior Colts A and B, and Senior Colts A. Against Strathallan, we won 2 and drew 2 of the 6 matches, with wins for the Junior Colts A and Senior Colts B. The 1st XI had a gutsy 1-1 draw away. The U13 team has also begun well, with a 2-2 draw away to Belhaven and a 3-2 victory over Stewart's Melville. In the Schools cup, the 1st XI beat Grove Academy comfortably, 9-2.
The 1st XI travel to Belfast today, with a Girls XI, for a weekend tour. They will play 4 matches, and will no doubt enjoy some good Irish hospitality as well as playing some good hockey!
Week 2
Scottish Open Lacrosse Tournament
Saturday 19 January 2008
Fifteen schools from both England and Scotland travelled to Loretto on Saturday for the Scottish Open Lacrosse Tournament. The rain held off and the pitches were in a wonderful condition. The 1st XII tournament consisted of 11 schools, where the English Schools played the Scottish Schools and the top 4 schools overall played in the semi finals. The 2nd XII tournament consisted of 2 pools of 6 where the top 2 schools from each pool went through to the semi finals. A high standard of lacrosse was played throughout the tournament. Many of the English Schools play lacrosse for two terms and it was therefore good to see the Scottish schools holding their own two weeks into their season. Follow the link to read the full article:

The Loretto U15 rugby team progressed to the quarter finals of the Bell Lawrie Plate competition on Tuesday by defeating Earlston High School 32-12. A strong defensive performance saw the lads snuff out the opposition threat whilst strong running from the half backs and back row led to 5 good tries.
Chloe Hunt, Rosie Urquhart, Rosanna Single and Catherine Smaill all represented Junior Scotland Lacrosse at the Junior Territorials in England this term. Unfortunately the tournament was abandoned half way through due to bad weather. However, congratulations to all four girls for this outstanding achievement with particular mention to Chloe who captained the side.
Dandylions vs WOSPS Rugby, 14 November 2007
Last Wednesday (14/11) the annual WOSPS vs Dandylions rugby match was played at Ardvreck. Loretto was well-represented in the Dandylions XV with Tom Middlemass, Charlie Buchanan Smith, Cameron Good, Oscar Lowe and Struan White (a Dandylion from last year) all featuring in the starting line up.
For more photos see the Gallery page of the website
The match was a very even contest with both defences on top. Space was limited but Cameron Good and Oscar Lowe (playing on the left wing and right wing respectively) received a lot of the ball and were very adventurous in attempting to breach the WOSPS defence. Charlie Buchan Smith (scrum half) had a sound game linking well with forwards and backs alike creating the perfect hinge for all that the Dandylions tried to do.
Tom Middlemass (wing forward) had a storming game both in defence where he tackled resolutely all day and in attack where he was happy to take the ball forward at every opportunity. Struan White (full back) was tested throughout the game as the WOSPS played a more tactical game with the boot but he dealt with everything that came his way in a most competent manner.
The match was very even throughout and genuine scoring opportunities were few and far between and as the game wore on it became apparent that the first team to score would probably win the match. So it proved to be with the WOSPS scoring a try (and conversion) with about five minutes remaining to win the match 7-0.
The Loretto players played with distinction and courage throughout and passed this test at the next level up with flying colours. Congratulations go to Charlie Buchanan Smith, Struan White and Oscar Lowe who have been selected to play for the Scottish Prep Schools U-13 XV in their annual match against Yorkshire Prep Schools. This year the match is being hosted at Mowden Hall on Sunday 25 November with a 2.00pm kick off.
Dandylions v WOSPS Netball, 14 November 2007
Congratulations to Iona Urquhart who represented the Dandylions on 14th November at Kilgraston in the annual netball match against the WOSPS.
Primarily, it is an extremely competitive afternoon of netball however it is also a great opportunity for the girls to socialise and meet others from the many different schools represented. We travelled up to Kilgraston with Belhaven and it was decided on the way there that Loretto sandwiches in the packed lunches were way better than the Belhaven ones! Also of great importance is the kit and on arrival the girls all got their lovely pale pink Dandylion hoodies!
The matches themselves were extremely competitive and resulted in the Dandylion A team winning convincingly and the B team narrowly loosing 7 - 8. Iona played extremely well in the position of goalkeeper, intercepting numerous passes into the circle and clearing the ball out of the defence effectively. As our sole ambassador she represented Loretto extremely well! Kilgraston served up a lovely match tea but there was still a small space for fish and chips on the way home!
Loretto is to host the Dandylion v WOSPS hockey match next term!
Edinburgh Schools U16 Rugby Squad
Matthew Swinburne and Tom Scott have been selected to train with the Edinburgh Schools U16 rugby squad.
Football Match
Loretto U16s v George Heriots U16.
Final score 3-2.
In a thrilling game on 31st October at 5.30pm the Loretto lads went out there and gave Heriots (who, just to put it in perspective, are sponsored and train on a daily basis) a great game. As a bodge-job squad of 13 whose only practice as a team was the 15 minutes waiting for Mr Clarke to arrive back to drive our bus. To be honest, we all hoped to have a good game but, realistically, to be well beaten.
But, to our surprise, we were far more a team then they were. A good finish by Louis Galloway early in the first period had them rattled; a nice comeback strike by them had us level, with a few minutes left in the half. An outstanding piece of individualism by Matthew Swinburne from the halfway line and then a huge shot outside the box into the top left, had our noses just poking in front, sniffing victory's sweet smell. To the team's horror, though, early in the second half a slight lack of concentration on Cameron Allan's aprt as goalkeeper had them drawing back level with a few minutes left on the clock. As was the story all game, though, we were not about to go down easily. A lucky deflection off Cameron Smith's shot, then, was in our favour and at last the whistle blew and we had won! A great effort from all the team: Thomas Hjorth Hamilton (Cpt), Cameron Simcock, Cameron Allan, Cameron Smith, Tom Cahn, Ian McDowell, Louis Galloway, Luke Bullard, Jamie Perriam, Ross Paterson, James McCormick, Matthew Swinburne.
Loretto Cricketers in Denmark
Loretto cricketers played for the U13 Scotland team in the European Cricket Championships in Nykobing, Denmark August 2007. They were in League 1 against Denmark, Holland and Ireland. Charlie B-S also played for the U12 Scotland team which he captained throughout the season. Loretto was the only School or Club that had three players in the team, a real credit to both the School and the boys! See more photos on the Gallery page of the website.
Laura Goodson has been selected to join the Bank of Scotland Talented Young Athletes Regional Training Squad programme for 2007/2008.

Catherine Smaill did extremely well in the Under 18 East District Hockey trials to gain a place on the Under 18 squad which will train for the Scottish Inter District Tournament to take place in November.
Catherine also played for the Scottish Women's Cricket Team this summer in Holland playing Holland, Ireland and England. She has been selected for Scotland to go to the Womens Cricket World Cup Qualifiers now being held in South Africa.
Chloe Hunt travelled to Ontario in Canada with the Under 19 Scottish Lacrosse Squad to play in the Under 19 World Cup. Scotland were placed 7th overall and our congratulations should go to Chloe who was ranked in the top 5 best performers within the Scottish team.
Laura Goodson competed at Birmingham in the UK Young Athletes League Final. She won the gold in the 3000m and silver in the 1500m (with only a 2 hour break between events). Her 3000m time of 10.56 should qualify her for the Bank of Scotland Squad.
Stephen and Alan Dick have joined us this year to coach both the girls and boys hockey. Both are Scottish international players and Stephen is currently in the Great Britain squad preparing for the next Olympics. Stephen and Alan joined the senior girls for their pre season training before term started. Stephen worked with the outfield players focusing on individual skills and game play, while Alan worked with the goalkeepers on their diving! Inverleith Hockey Club

A senior girls' hockey squad travelled down to Pangbourne College to compete in their Pre season tournament. They spent Friday training at the College and then played in the Tournament on Saturday against Pangbourne College, Perse School, Stowe School and Brighton College. Although they were unable to secure any wins they played some excellent hockey and it proved to be super preparation for the start of their season.
Summer Term 2007
Scottish Schools Track and Field Championships
8 June 2007
Friday at Grangemouth saw 238 schools from across Scotland compete at the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships: a total of over 1400 athletes.
Duncan Arthur from the Lower Sixth competed in the Open 100m, completing the event in a very respectable time, given that his training hadn't gone to plan.
Laura Goodson from the 4th form entered what was a highly competitive field in the U17 girls 1500m. This is Laura's first year in the age group, and with a number of other athletes a year older than her, it was always going to be a tough day. Nevertheless, she ran an excellent qualifying race, and secured a place in the final.
The final saw 12 of Scotland's finest female distance runners battle it out in this gruelling race. A remarkable race saw the previous Scottish record (4.33, held for over 20 years by Yvonne Murray, formerly of Musselburgh Grammer) being beaten by the first three finishers, with first place winning in 4.24, a time quick enough to qualify for the World Juniors. Laura finished an impressive eighth, and managed to achieve the Scottish Schools Athletics Badge standard by running in under 5 minutes.

Team of the season is clearly the Junior Colts A, coached by Mr Dickinson. They can rightly be proud of their achievement of going through the season unbeaten. Jamie Arnot was a fine captain and playmaker, with Henry Fisher and Jonny Perriam main goalscorers. They were also Scottish Chameleons U14 6 a side champions. The Senior Colts too, under Mr Erskine, have defeated Strathallan twice, Glenalmond and Fettes (once) in an excellent season. James McCormick in goal was the find of the season, and with Tom Cahn's excellent defending, gave real solidity at the back.
At Senior level, both 1st and 2nd XIs have enjoyed some great results. The 2nd XI were looking to be unbeaten too, before falling away in the last few matches. Marcel Goldenberg in goal was Mr Pierce's choice for player of the season. Highlights for the 1st XI would be the away win to Glenalmond, and a fine performance in the last match to defeat Robert Gordon's College 3-2. With a young XI, only captain Finn McCullough will not be back next year. Duncan Milne in goal, and Tom Dunford at centre forward have been the outstanding performers, but all have contributed to a very enjoyable season.
These teams enjoyed their mini tour to Yorkshire and the NE of England. Similar tours are planned for next year, and the possibility of the Boys 1st XI going to Holland with the Girls 1st XI, Easter 2008.
Finally on behalf of all the boys, our thanks to Graham Moodie, Scotland and GB, for the coaching he has done over the season.(JDB)

Junior School Hockey Master Class
A spring-like Monday afternoon welcomed a number of local schools to take part in Loretto's Hockey Master Class with Graham Moodie (Hockey GB, Olympic player, and Captain of Scotland), and one of his team mates, Stephen Dick (Hockey GB and Commonwealth Games player).
A very rewarding session of hockey took place with the children seeing how the pros tackled 'drag flicking' and 'reverse stick hitting' and this culminated in a series of short games. Many thanks to our celebrity coaches for the afternoon and for the staff and pupils for making it happen.
Week 9
Saturday 10 March 2007
Scottish Schools Cross-Country Championships, Irvine
Having planned to take four teams to the National Championships, the school cross-country squad was unfortunately affected by a late injury to one of our O17 runners, and subsequently this team had to pull out. However, an U15 boys and girls team, and an U17 girls team made the journey over to Irvine to compete in what was a demanding and challenging day of running.
Our U15 girls, affected also by the late withdrawal of a team member, nevertheless competed well. In a race with over 200 runners, Alex Robb did well to come home in 27th place, closely followed behind by Georgie Single in 30th. Fellow third former Sophie Dickinson wasn't far behind in 49th place, and whilst Amyleigh Drysdale finished further down the field, she nevertheless put in a strong effort for a 2nd former, and her efforst were much appreciated, given she was only drafted in half an hour before we departed for Irvine! The girls finished in 5th place overall, though not far behind 3rd and 4th.
The U15 boys were challenged by a strong, competitive field, but like the girls, ran well to come home in 5th place. Despite a period of illness and injury, Ed Dudgeon ran through his discomfort to finish in 24th place, with teammate Ewen Donaldson in 48th, Johnny Perriam in 50th, and Harry Marriot in 63rd.
Our U17 girls were our last hope of a medal in the championships, and the squad was a strong one. Unfortunately, as with Ed, our strongest runner Laura Goodson has been hampered by injury in the past months, but despite this, and despite being 'young' for the age-group, she ran well to finish in 18th place. Harriet Wood's gutsy run ensured she finished in the top 40, with a strong run from Suzannah Brownlie placing her in 54th, whilst Phoebe Martin (battling with a throat infection) managed to come home in 69th. 4th Former Hannah Leach also ran well in 71st place, with Sara Dudgeon coming home in 79th. Our four 'counting runners' notched up a team total of 118 points, which was enough to earn us joint 3rd position. Devestatingly, we were denied the opportunity of a medal, as in the event of a tied placing, it is the team with the highest placed 4th runner that gets the medal. It was a disappointing and heartbreaking outcome for the girls, but nevertheless a fine achievement.
All the runners performed well, and encouragingly, most can still compete in the same age group next year. Development and perseverence is the key to success, and whilst it is disappointing to return home from the Chamionships empty-handed, we have learned some valuable lessons that can be applied next year, and prospects look good. Scottish Schools Lacrosse Ryden Rosebowl Tournament
2nd XII RESULTS:
vs St Leonard's 2nd XII - Won 2-0
vs Fettes 2nd XII - Drew 2-2
vs Fettes 3rd XII Won 4-2
vs Glenalmond 3rd XII - Won 5-0
vs Loretto 3rd XII - Won
vs Glenalmond 2nd XII - Won 2-1
Tournament Position: 1st
The 2nd XII played some outstanding lacrosse at the 2nd and 3rd XII Scottish Tournament to return on Thursday with the Ryden Rosebowl!
Going into the tournament the only team that the 2nd XII had lost to were Fettes and therefore they knew that if they played their best lacrosse on the day they had every chance of winning. The day started well with a 2 - 0 win over St Leonards 2nd XII. The team was then ready and prepared for their most difficult competition - Fettes. It was clear that they too knew this was a crunch game and the match itself was very physical and competitive. Fettes scored the first goal and our team quickly realized that they had a contest on their hands. Rosanna Single had a magnificent game, and on several occasions had to pick herself up of the ground to play on. Jasmine Sawyer and Claire Macalister Hall then scored 2 beautiful goals before they scored the equalizer. The squad at this point knew that the tournament was there for the taking!
The 'wobble' came against Fettes 3rd XII however at 2 - 2 after 10 minutes into the game our girls took control and finished the game off with lovely goals from Ailsa Monro and Claire Macalister Hall. From this point onwards the girls played some strong attacking lacrosse against Glenalmond and Loretto 3rd XII. They even successfully used some of the attacking set plays (Rambo, Mambo and Richard - the names of the set plays) that had been worked on prior to the tournament. The game against our own 3rd XII saw some excellent defence from the 3rd XII but some very strong goal scoring from the 2nd XII.
Going into the final match against Glenalmond 2nd XII the team knew they had to give their all. The rain had started but this did not dampen the spirits and determination of the Loretto girls. It was a frantic game and with minutes to go the score was 1 - 1. However a final attempt was made and the ball was brought out of defence and several passes were made down the pitch to Claire Macalister Hall who received the ball and drove hard towards the goal, keeping her cool and driving the ball into the back of the net. The tournament had been won with a marvelous team performance.
The girls were delighted to have won and deserved the cheers and congratulations during the presentations. A proud moment for Mrs Fletcher!

Scottish Schools Lacrosse U14 Tournament
Loretto 3rd Form A
vs St Leonard's Won 1-0
vs Glenalmond Drew 0-0
vs Fettes Won 1-0
vs St George's Won 2-0
Tournament Position: 1st
The 2007 season for the 3rd form lacrosse girls continues to go from strength to strength, and the girls were deserved winners of the Scottish Schools Lacrosse Tournament. Whilst they didn't play the calibre of lacrosse that they are capable of, the girls can now say that they are Scottish champions! A hard-fought first match against St Leonard's was won thanks to a crucial goal from wing Alex Robb, whilst the 'crunch tie' of the tournament against Glenalmond was a nail-biting 0-0 draw. The defence worked extremely hard to ensure that the threat from the opposition was thwarted. Whilst we didn't secure many attacking opportunities, our solidity in defence was admirable. With Glenalmond drawing their next game against St Leonard's, the tournament was there for the taking, and a goal from captain Georgie Single ensured that the team went one step closer to this by beating Fettes 1-0. The final match saw the team begin to play some excellent lacrosse, with quality goals from both Georgie Single and Alex Robb, and this was enough to secure the top position in the tournament. Impressively, the team did not concede any goals, and keeper Emma Wauchope must be congratulated for her part in this, along with a robust defence, including 2nd formers Steph Sharkey and Helen McCoach (her first outing for the A team). Captain and coach were unanimous in their assertion that Player of the Tournament was Mairi Cameron, who stood out as a key figure in the squad throughout all the matches. The girls should all be proud of this fine achievement. [PJM]
